Why biochar & where does it come from?

Biochar is made from pine trees and other renewable / organic resources

We recognize Biochar’s ability to rejuvenate soil carbon levels, sequester CO2, reduce nutrient runoff, and increase water holding capacity. The biochar also provides a great home for microbial activity. In some cases plant response has shown growth rates that have increased as well as bigger yields and overall quality of the end product.

 

We put biochar in every product Miller Soils makes. We make our Biochar from pine trees and other renewable and organic resources from the intermountain west to the west coast. We are committed to using nothing but the best and most constant biochar from environmentally friendly processes to put in each of Miller Soils products. Then we blend only the highest quality all natural and organic ingredients in to Miller Soils grow medias like Reds Premium, Soil Amendments, CoCo and composted products that Miller Soils produces. All the biochar we use comes from western forest and when managed properly it is an endless source of woody biomass to be turned in to biochar.

 

With partners like South Fork Wood Products and others like them we can put the forest to work, reduce fire risk, and improve forest health. Also we use previously unused forest waste from fuel reduction projects that reduce fire risk and logging debris that would just be left to burned and release co2 in to the atmosphere. All the while improving forest practices and helping offset our own carbon foot print. What else is in it and where does it come from?

We think it all starts with the soil, below our feet and undetectable to the naked eye, small microbes (the terrific digesters of the earth) continuously break down natural products into a more functional form that helps plants grow. We source nothing but the best compost from Colorado, Idaho and Washington.
