We recognize biochar’s ability to rejuvenate soil carbon levels, sequester CO2, reduce nutrient runoff, and increase water holding capacity. The biochar also provides a great home for microbial activity. In some cases plant response has shown growth rates that have increased as well as bigger yields and overall quality of the end product. Miller Soils puts biochar in the majority of our products. We make our own biochar from pine trees and other renewable and organic resources from the intermountain west to the west coast. We are committed to using nothing but the best and most consistent biochar from environmentally-friendly processes to put in our products.
All the biochar we produce comes from western forest sources and when managed properly it is an endless source of woody biomass to be turned into biochar. With partners like South Fork Wood Products (amongst others), we can put the foresters to work, reduce fire risk, and improve forest health. We use forest waste from fuel reduction projects that reduce fire risk, as well as logging debris that would just be left to burn and release CO2 into the atmosphere. Biochar is the backbone of our company, not only for it’s horticultural benefits, but also for the role it plays in larger natural systems. It embodies ecological balance and the idea that nothing is ‘waste’ - we carry that philosophy over to everything we do.

We think it all starts with the soil, below our feet and undetectable to the naked eye, small microbes (the terrific digesters of the earth) continuously break down natural products into a more functional form that helps plants grow. This is why Miller Soils finds the importance of soil microbes to be huge. That’s why we use Hake’s Microbes along with other beneficial microbes and micronize. We source nothing but the best compost from Colorado, Idaho and Washington. We keep it local because of quality and freshness first, to lower co2 foot prints and less moving of products which equals a low cost to you and the planet. Saving you time and money. Then we blend only the highest quality all natural and organic ingredients in to Miller Soils grow medias like Reds Premium, Soil Amendments, CoCo and composted products that Miller Soils produces.
